There are two brain tumour tissue banks in the North-West. Both have ungergone ethical review for Research Tissue Bank (RTB) status. The BTNW bank is held at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, Preston and the Walton Research Tissue bank is held at the Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Liverpool.
Access to tissues from these repositories is made by submission of a short joint application form which outlines the project and tissue requirements and is subject to review by a panel comprising senior clinicians and academics. Users must sign a Tissue Transfer Agreement and Memorandum of Agreement to handling tissues within the Human Tissue Act.
By granting tissue release these RTBs proxy generic ethical approval for research projects pertaining to brain tumours by BTNW members. Publications must acknowledge the use of the RTBs and any funding charities. For the BTNW bank this is the Sidney Driscoll Neuroscience Foundation (SDNF).
